Faith In Action Ministry is a response to the gospel call to build the Kingdom of God here on Earth. Rooted in scripture and supported by Catholic social teaching, we reach out in compassion to love, heal, liberate and bless the world. At the Franciscan Renewal Center, we seek to embody Francis and Clare’s connection with the poor and vulnerable in our own life and actions.
Greetings! Let me introduce myself. My name is Patti Sills-Trausch and I have been involved in social justice ministry in one way or another for the last 26 years. I have my Masters from the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University of Chicago and have worked in Youth Ministry, College Campus Ministry and Outreach and Social Justice ministry both at the parish and Diocesan level. I am happy to be a part of the Casa community and look forward to working with many of you as we seek concrete ways to love and bless the world. For a more complete understanding of why I work in this ministry please see my introduction from the bulletin.
Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching: The Church’s social teacing is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness admist the challenges of modern society. Below are some key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.
- Life and Dignity of the Human Person
- Call to Family, Community and Participation
- Rights and Responsibilities
- Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
- The Dignity of Work and the Rights of theh Worker
- Solidarity
- Care for God’s Creation
The work of Social Action is done in many forms. Communities of Salt and Light a document of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops designs a way to organize one’s Social Justice efforts.

The following are excerpts are from Communities of Salt and Light: Reflections on The Social Mission of the Parish
“Our faith communities are measured by how they serve "the least of these" in our parish and beyond its boundaries-the hungry, the homeless, the sick, those in prison, the stranger (cf. Mt 25:31). Our local families of faith are called to "hunger and thirst for justice" and to be "peacemakers" in our own communities (c£ Mt 5:6,9). A faith community cannot really proclaim the gospel if its message is not reflected in its own community life. The biblical call to charity, justice, and peace claims not only each believer, but also each community where believers gather for worship, formation, and pastoral care.“
“The faith communities that are leaders in this area, see social ministry not as a specialized ministry, but as an integral part of the entire parish. They weave the Catholic social mission into every aspect of parish life-worship, formation, and action. They follow a strategy of integration and collaboration, which keeps social ministry from becoming isolated or neglected.” To read the entire document go to: http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/saltandlight.shtml#roots
The SAM council and all interested members of the Casa community are invited to study this document and develop a framework for growing and integrating the Social Action Ministry into the community life. If you are interested in joining this study session, please contact Patti Sills-Trausch.
All Social Action Ministry efforts are grounded in principles found in Scripture and Catholic Social Teaching
