''In Love and Blessing: Celebrating Feminine Franciscan Practice in Contemporary Life''
Discover what we can learn from the first Franciscan women!
St. Clare’s medieval world has striking similarities to our own, and her life with her sisters in Assisi can give us wonderful clues that reaffirm the spiritual dimension of our own contemporary lives. St. Clare experienced God’s good blessing in her own life, in her sisters, and in all of Assisi. We too, can know such joyfulness and grace.
We will explore what it means to belong, to heal, and to contemplate, so as to become lovers of no less than a soul-filled world, and one another. Inspired by the example of St. Clare, it will be an opportunity to look with fresh eyes at how God is still with us, and present in all the day-to-day events of our lives.

''Into the Darkness, Into the Light''
Author and actor Jay Hornbacher created this original one-person drama. The story is about his sense of God's constant presence in his life, but not an unwavering sense. The notion of faith as something that comes and goes, often without apparent rhyme or reason, is inherent in worshiping a God who is both immanent and transcendent. This is a God who seems as close as his own skin one moment and as far away as the farthest reaches of the cosmos the next. You will recognize stories from scripture, poetry of great writers and character sketches that will make you laugh and cry. Fee per person includes dinner and show: $30.

''The Future of the Family'' Evening with John Bradshaw
This presentation will touch upon the history of the American family. Using the work of the brilliant historian, Stephanie Koonz, John will explore the myth of the traditional American family. He will show how families have always adapted to the economic circumstances in which they had to survive.
Since the end of World War II, several human rights movements have paved the way for “deep democracy.” Deep democracy is more directly participatory and demands absolute equality and freedom for all human beings. This new environment creates a context where old-fashioned “virtue” is the condition of success.
John will describe a new understanding of a fully-functioning marriage and outline the following day’s workshop, which will focus on raising morally virtuous children for the future.

After September 11, 2001, he was a Red Cross coordinator of chaplains at the Family Assistance Center in New York and counseled thousands of victim's relatives and rescue workers. A Pax Christi USA Ambassador of Peace, he currently works with Pax Christi New Mexico on their campaign to disarm Los Alamos. He also writes a weekly column for the National Catholic Reporter.

A Jesus Retreat: Come Apart and Spend Some Time with Jesus.
Jesus asked his disciples: "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" And then, pointedly, to the disciples: "But who do you say that I am?" (Matthew 16:13,15). During this retreat we will study and learn from our own different ideas, the images used in the Bible and the teachings of the Church over the centuries in response to Jesus' questions. We will use Sacred Scripture, so please bring your Bibles! And we will have time for discussion, community prayer and private prayer.

A Spiritual Solution to Weight Loss and Balanced Health with Bronwyn Marmo
Studies show that a person's chances for success with weight-loss improve significantly in a support group setting. Not only do they lose more pounds than those who are trying to go it alone, but they are much more likely to keep the weight off. Bronwyn does not endorse any particular nutrition plan. She does endorse the idea that weight loss is a physical and emotional adventure and more importantly a spiritual one. So, whether you are trying to lose those last five pounds, or shed more weight than you ever thought you'd be carrying, allow the fellowship of the group to offer you support, compassion and understanding.
Fee per person: $120 includes workbook authored by Bronwyn Marmo; $15 for additional materials paid directly to instructor.Click on a date to register:

Centering Prayer and Attention of the Heart "A Silent Retreat"
In the classic Christian tradition, the heart is not the seat of one's personal emotional life, but an organ of spiritual perception. When awakened, it allows us to stay aligned with our true self, or in other words, God's presence and action in our lives expressing itself as our deepest inner authenticity. This silent retreat will combine teaching and meditation. We will explore Centering Prayer's unique capacity to awaken and deepen attention of the heart.

Christian Spirituality: Jesus the Christ
Our images of Jesus stand at the heart of our experience and belief as Christian people. Contemporary scholarship in biblical studies, the historical and social sciences and archaeological research provide a wealth of insight into the story of Jesus and the origins of Christianity. These studies give us a clearer picture of who Jesus was and who his disciples and the early Christians understood him to be. These studies are also changing and providing us with clearer images of Jesus with regard to his person and his redeeming work. These changing images of Jesus can serve to strengthen and deepen our faith in God, our appreciation for Jesus and our personal response to grace.
This class will begin with a discussion of the foundations of religious faith including our understanding of God, the meanings of revelation and faith and their relationship to belief, doctrine, scripture and tradition. We will consider how the results of contemporary studies affect our understanding of the humanity and divinity of Jesus and his saving work. The class will engage participants in dialogue and small group discussion on the implications of these renewed understandings in their own personal lives of faith.

Dead Sea Scrolls Today
What was life like for Jews and Christians living in the Holy Land under Roman rule? Beginning 50 years ago, archaeologist and biblical scholars were, for the first time, able to offer the world profoundly new answers to these questions with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The 900 or so scroll fragments which were found in caves located in the Judean desert just south of the city of Jericho, have revolutionized our understanding of ancient Judaism and early Christianity. The Dead Sea Scrolls have also provided stunning new insights into the 2000-year-old manuscript transmission and formation of the Bible.

Dis-identification From Type
Personality is "who I think I am." It is a self-concept that builds in childhood and, once formed, is so much "who we are" that we do not recognize it as a highly sophisticated construct built from imagination, imitation, and a need to be appreciated. Our identifications protect us from feelings of anxiety, discomfort, and uncertainty about facing the unknown, yet limit our freedom to experience and act from a truer, inner self. The objectives of this course are to clarify and deepen our understanding that personality is a structure which is formed and held in place by habits of attention to develop and strengthen one's awareness and experience of her/his inner observer. The format is highly interactive and includes exercises, practices, and dialogue on the habits of attention, idealization, identification, secondary gain, stress and security points that reinforce the structure of type.

Don't Forgive Too Soon
The hurts of life can diminish our sense of belonging and cause stress, depression, meaninglessness and physical illness. Forgiveness brings healing, but how can we forgive others and stand up for ourselves at the same time? Such healthy forgiveness helps us recover our sense of belonging to ourselves, others, God and the universe. During this retreat, the Linns will lead participants in the simple ways of forgiveness and healing that they have found most universally effective during their years of ministry in over fifty countries. Their presentations and healing processes will integrate spirituality with psychology, medicine and science, and are intended to foster social and political healing as well as personal growth. Participants can take these ways of healing home to share with family and friends.

Elderhostel - April
Forget the plane reservations, gas shortages or leaving the country!!! Bring a friend and come to the beautiful Franciscan Renewal Center in the heart of Paradise Valley, AZ for a perfect "get-away." You will enjoy five days of rest, renewal and learning. We offer two classes over the 5 days with time for healthy, gentle exercise, social time and good food. The first offering is “The Book of Ecclesiastes” that will take you back over the centuries with philosophers, theologians and other lovers of the Bible who have invoked the Book of Ecclesiastes as a classic western text on exploring the meaning of life. Yet, two thousand years of interpreting the book has left the modern reader with a variety of approaches as to the message of Ecclesiastes. Participants in this series of presentations will be introduced to the major interpretations of the book as a means of enhancing their own reading and understanding of Ecclesiastes and, hopefully, the meaning of life! Your instructor is Brian Schmidt, Ph.D from the University of Michigan. The second offering is "The Magic of the Native American Flute" with John and Sherry Vames. The sound of the Native American flute has the power to soothe and heal and is a wonderful means of relaxation. Also known as the love flute, it was used in courting rituals in ancient tribes. It is player friendly and prior music experience is not necessary. This workshop will give you the knowledge necessary to play and create your own music. Each person will receive a hand carved Native American Flute, flute bag and study material.

Election Aftermath: What's Next?
The 2008 National Elections have given us a new President and Congress. As we shift from the hard-fought campaign to our new national agenda, how do our Gospel values inform our policy priorities? As Catholics we view all social policies through the lens of whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. Through hands-on interactive sessions learn how we can focus that lens on major issues in our world and make a difference in terms of Health Care, Immigration and Global Climate Change. End the day with an evening prayer experience, including song, dance and storytelling, of what it means to be the Body of Christ in the world.
IF WE ARE THE BODY...
Evening program with Sisters in Christ 6-8:30pm includes dinner. We believe Jesus came to change the world. We also believe that we have been given the directive to continue the work he began, to care for the widow, the orphan and the stranger and bring about a world of peace. In this chaotic and pressure-filled world, when 24 hours aren't enough in a day, how can we respond? Maybe you'll find an answer or two in the stories, song and dance in this performance.

Enneagram: Projection & Defense
The defense mechanism is an unconscious habit of mind that serves to protect our view of ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. Defense mechanisms serve to hold projections, the misreading of reality that is rooted in type, in place. An awareness and loosening of these defensive barriers leads to greater spiritual, psychological, and emotional freedom. The objectives of this course are to deepen our understanding of each type’s defenses, lessen the need for the defense mechanisms, and open the door to greater spiritual freedom.
Format is highly interactive and includes exercises, practices, and dialogue that awaken the intuitive knowing of the Inner Observer and qualities of Presence. Topics include the passion, virtue, defense mechanism, projection, and avoidance of each of the Enneagram types.

Enneagram: Type and False Identity
Personality is “who I think I am.”
It is a self-concept that builds in childhood and, once formed, is so much “who we are” that we do not recognize it as a highly sophisticated construct built from imagination, imitation, and a need to be appreciated. Our identifications protect us from feelings of anxiety, discomfort, and uncertainty about facing the unknown, yet limit our freedom to experience and act from a truer, inner self.
The objectives of this course are to clarify and deepen our understanding that personality is a structure which is formed and held in place by habits of attention and to develop and strengthen one’s awareness and experience of their inner observer.
The format is highly interactive and includes exercises, practices, and dialogue on the habits of attention, idealization, identification, secondary gain, stress and security points that reinforce the structure of type.

Evening of Renewal
he year 2005 marked the convergence of the death of John Paul II and the 50th anniversary of the death of Teihard de Chardin. Both John Paul and Tiehard proclaimed a "Mass of the Universe"-thus the Mass of the "Cosmic Christ." As we probe Mars and seek for life in outer space, as well as try to nourish our inner space, the "Cosmic Christ" gives us a new and vibrant image for our interplanatery consciousness and our spiritual quest in 2006 and the coming years.

Exploring the Enneagram Types
Join us in exploring and deepening our understanding of each of the Enneagram Types. We will explore each type as a tool for self-discovery and self-healing by observing exemplars for each type and working with dyads and audience participation. Utilizing the spiritual practices of mediation and self-observation, we can more objectively view the personality structure that has served us so well and, conversely, has become our greatest obstacle. This class is designed especially for those who have begun their study by taking the Introduction to the Enneagram but we welcome advanced students as well or anyone who would like to deepen their awareness of the types.

Franciscan Prayer: Awakening The Desert in Each of Us
Sts. Francis and Clare of Assisi along with others in the Franciscan movement help us to see how our ancient contemplative tradition wants to bring new flowering in today's deserts. Gathering for this weekend we will attend to "The Sentinel," "The Prophet," and "The Word of Life." Each of these symbols awaken in us a new realization. The Sentinel invites us to wait and watch. The Prophet asks us to wonder and witness from the fruitful desert of our daily lives. The Word of Life, which is planted within, seeks full expression in the midst of our ordinary lives. Together, with simple practices of meditation and conversation, we will open these themes in practical ways so we may experience the light of our own practices. Our heart's longings converge in a bright, hopeful light of a new awakening for today's world and Church.

Free Your Breath, Free Your Life
So many of us today live unconscious, fragmentary lives driven by fear, guilt, anger, anxiety and tension. “Whenever we really pause for a moment and look, we see that we are faced with the mystery and miracle of ourselves here and now as living, breathing beings.” Dennis’ work with the breath is to help us explore and awaken who and what we really are in our essence, in our true self. He had written two books, The Tao of Natural Breathing and Free Your Breath, Free Your Life as well as a three-part CD audio program, “Natural Breathing.”

God's Extravagant Love: Reclaiming the Franciscan Theological Tradition
"As Francis responded to the needs of his time and to the call to rebuild the church, so too are we called upon to respond to the needs of our time and help rebuild a broken world." -Mary Beth Ingham, csj, Scotus for Dunces, pg. 148.
"God's Extravagant Love" retreat calls us into full participation in the Franciscan Way of living. This retreat is designed to do the following:
Consider the basic attitudes of the Franciscan worldview in a simple, creative, challenging manner.
Enable us to experience the truth of this alternative theological tradition and recognize it deep within our own spirit.
Help identify the implications of the Franciscan theological tradition for our times, "bringing the tradition into dialogue with today's questions."
Provide resources for ongoing education, and fuller participation in the reclaiming of this tradition. The retreat was created in 2003 by the OFM Commission on The Franciscan Intellectual Tradition (CFIT). It was written by 21 Franciscan sisters, and each retreat is presented by a group of three of the sisters.

Heart to Heart Communication
Oprah Winfrey recently said that the single greatest need she observes in virtually everyone she interviews is the "need to be heard." We want to be seen and to be understood and often our language stimulates disconnection and pain for ourselves, our families, our friends and our workmates. In this workshop, you will learn how to direct your attention to identify the feelings and needs that motivate us to speak and to listen. You will practice speaking clearly from your heart and
